Have you ever thought to yourself, I should just hit my big sister with a maraca, that would make this Jazz song sound really good?
Unless your under 5, it is unlikely you have thought this. Unfortunately this was the last 5 minutes of my Monday piano teaching.
If you're unfamiliar this is similar to the maracas we were using:
Just a wooden ball, handle filled with beads. Ouch!
In having my students explore jazz rhythms this week, I found myself sitting down and experimenting with simply jazz rhythm. I did not, however, hit my sister with a maraca. In doing so, I was really able to vibe with the beats around jazz music, and begin to predict beat systems and tempo changes.
This stripped down my focus to a very basic level, and I found myself breaking down sounds and songs. This weeks learning wasn't really related to technology, but still a good lesson in learning.
I have in fact wanted to him my sister in the head with many objects but I can’t say I’ve ever thought of a maraca. Also sometimes it’s just great to take a step back and look from another perspective. Sometimes the way you look at something can create something beautiful. - Zach Hirshmiller
